Overview

The aim of the course is to prepare graduates for careers as sophisticated managers and consultants in where the role of information technology and its impact on business organisations is well-understood and appreciated, so that the quality of their professional advice and development skills can be assured.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Logic and problem-solving
  • Visual Programming
  • Computer Hardware and Software Architectures
  • Information Systems

Level 2 topics include:

  • Project management
  • Systems Analysis, Design and Usability
  • Databases and Web-based Information Systems Development
  • Professional Issues, Ethics and Computer Law
  • Introduction to Networks and Operating Systems

Level 3 topics include:

  • E-business and E-commerce
  • Advanced Database Systems Development
  • Project
  • Choice of module from topic areas which may include IT Security , Management Support Systems, Enterprise Systems Modelling and Integration or Application Development as well as a work placement

You will also have an option so that you can study further in an area of your interest, for example, IT Security, Enterprise Systems or Application Development.

Assessment

You are assessed through exams, essays, reports, individual and group practical work, presentations, projects and a final dissertation with regular supportive feedback.

Professional accreditation

Professional accreditation is being sought from the British Computer Society (BCS).

 

Career opportunities

BSc Business Information Technology is recognised in industry as well as academia, with previous graduates progressing to project management in Logica, associate roles in Knowledge Transfer Partnerships, consultancy projects and MSc programmes. The course prepares graduates for careers as sophisticated managers and consultants in where the role of information technology and its impact on business organisations is well-understood and appreciated, so that the quality of their professional advice and development skills can be assured.

The Faculty of Computing's World of Work (WOW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employability skills, gain real experience and 'earn while you learn' through placements into real client-driven projects - working with business and industry.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements,

  • You should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent) and
  • At least 200 points, of which at least 120 must be from a relevant area, from 2 or more A levels or 200 points from any of the following, or equivalent, with relevant content: BTEC National Diploma, AVCE, Advanced Diploma, Progression Diploma.
