Overview

The course has been designed to provide students with the opportunity to participate and to become reflective practitioners. The three year period of study equips students with the knowledge, skills and more importantly a critical understanding of theoretical debates and their application to social work.
You will be joining a social programme that has its history rooted in the principles of equality and social justice.

Course contents

Students are university during the first year of their study and in years two and three combine academic work with periods of assessed practice. Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Social Context of Social Work
  • Child Development
  • Social Work Through the Life Cycle
  • Social Policy: Themes and Issues
  • Introduction to Assessing Needs and Risk
  • Professional Ethics, Values and Legal Frameworks
  • Foundation for Practice

Level 2 topics include:

  • Theoretical Perspectives in Social Work
  • Safe Guarding Children
  • Planning for Care with Adults
  • Practice Placement (90 days)
  • Professional Law
  • Effective Communication Skills with Children and Families

Level 3 topics include:

  • Partnership Working and Management
  • Evaluating Research and Evidence Based Practice
  • Social Work Project EssayPractice Placement (110 days)

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, exams, oral presentations, group work, portfolio and two periods of assessed practice placements.

Professional accreditation

The General Social Care Council (GSCC) has accredited the University as an approved institute to offer this degree.

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course provides students with a professionally recognised qualification to practice as social workers.

Collaborative and international links

The programme has excellent co-operative relations with a number statutory organisations, local authorities and the voluntary sector. This is deemed to be an essential aspect of the ‘learning experience’ for students.
Staff are actively engaged with collaborative work (conferences, research and publications) with a numerous countries within the EU. The Presidency of the European Association of Social Workers is presently held by a member of the social work team.

We are only offering entry to year 1 of this course, and are not offering advanced entry (year 2/3).

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 280 UCAS points from two or more A levels, a Level 3 Advanced Diploma (or equivalent), or have completed an appropriate Access certificate. We welcome applications from mature candidates without formal qualifications, who have relevant experience and can show an ability to study at this level. All applicants must specify on the UCAS application form that they hold, or are in the process of taking, GCSE Mathematics and English grade C, or Key Skills communications level 3 and Numeracy level 2, or another English/ Mathematics qualification deemed by the University to be equivalent to GCSE Mathematics and GCSE English grade C or above. Please note that we are not offering University equivalence tests to students offered a place on this course.
In addition applicants must provide a reference reflecting a minimum of 6 months previous experience (at the point of application) either in a paid or voluntary capacity of working directly with vulnerable people normally within a social care or health context.
All offers of places are subject to satisfactory health and police checks and suitable references. All students who are offered a place will also be required to show original documentation confirming their stated qualifications in order to receive an unconditional offer of a place.
