Overview

The course provides a comprehensive and practical approach to health and social care. It is delivered in an interactive way, helping you to develop your confidence, knowledge and skills required for your future career. We will cover all key aspects including public health, health promotion, social care and ethical issues. An essential element of the course is having a suitable work or voluntary placement. A clear focus of this programme is developing your communication skills using evidence to inform your decisions to understand the critical issues in health and social care and ways of dealing with them.

Course contents

Two levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Understanding health and social care
  • Professional and ethical issues in health and social care practice
  • Understanding evidence based practice in public healt
  • Introducing practice

Level 2 topics include:

  • Health, illness and society
  • Health promotion & public health
  • Understanding research and ethics in health and social care
  • Groups and teamwork
  • Practice Learning

Assessment

You are assessed in a variety of ways including essays, individual reports, posters, practical exercises, seen examinations and a practice based portfolio.

Careers

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the health and social care fields this may be within the NHS, voluntary and independent sectors. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study. All students who meet the requirements will be able to progress onto the top up honours degree programme: BSc Health & Social Care.

Professional accreditation / exemption

This programme is aligned to Skills for Health Competences – this is the skills sector council for the NHS and students will be able to map their competences by the end of the programme enhancing their employment opportunities.

Collaborative and international links

The Centre for Primary Health and Social Care has research and teaching links with the City University of New York, USA and the University of the Western Cape in South Africa. Students will be able to benefit from these collaborations and in some instances may be involved in active projects and on-line discussion with their peers on similar international programmes.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have: at least 260 points, (two or more A levels, or a Level 3 Advanced Diploma or equivalent) and English Language GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent). These requirements may vary in individual cases. Applications are welcome from mature students with appropriate Access or other preparatory courses or appropriate work experience. We also welcome mature students without formal qualifications who are able to demonstrate enthusiasm, commitment, and the ability to benefit from higher education.
