Overview

Contemporary design asks you to know both traditional and emerging manufacturing and to design responsibly and ethically.
This course develops your ability to work as a cutting edge 3D designer, exploring furniture & product. Your ideas will be developed creatively and in detail and will be realised as models and prototypes. You will have opportunities to explore related 3D disciplines (such as textiles, interiors, fashion and/or jewellery) and to consider the needs of both the individual and society at large and to respond with innovative solutions founded in a sound understanding of design research and a range of technologies. The course develops your creative & professional independence, through working with clients on design visualisation & prototype production.
Tutors are leading design practitioners, with international reputations in industry and/or academic research. The Faculty offers excellent facilities for exploring, testing and developing products using traditional and modern materials and processes including polymer technology, cabinet making, upholstery, digital manufacturing methods, such as laser cutting, 3D printing and rapid manufacturing techniques. The course is taught in the heart of London’s creative district with future employers and commissioning agencies on your doorstop.

Student profiles

'We were recently involved in a banqueting chair project which was particularly challenging and which made me realise how complicated and individualistic a chair can be. It’s not ‘just a chair’ - it takes on a whole life of its own. I’ve also enjoyed the CAD skills I’ve been able to gain and hope that the next year will bring more hands-on workshop experience.’ Tanja Schlierkamp, 2007
