Overview

The events industry is a diverse, growing and global sector demanding committed individuals with strong event management, business, marketing and entrepreneurial skills. Situated in one of the world’s great event capitals this well established degree has been developed in conjunction with event employers. The degree is taught by experienced event professionals and academics who are committed to preparing their students for rewarding and successful futures. The programme combines practical event management experience with academic rigour and has, over the years, equipped our graduates to go on and succeed in a wide variety event and marketing related careers.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • A foundation to the Events Industry and an understanding of how your subject fits into associated industry sectors
  • Study skills essential for your success at University, alongside key skills in research and the study of statistical methodologies
  • The core aspects of Marketing and Communications
  • The underlying principles of Economics and Finance

Level 2 topics include:

  • Principles of event design and delivery
  • Essentials of human resource management within the Leisure and Tourism industries
  • Impacts of events on various stakeholder groups
  • Guided professional development in the area of events management and marketing
  • Foundations of entrepreneurial initiatives within the sector

Level 3 topics include:

  • Independent academic research
  • Foundations of strategy and communications
  • Financial aspects of event management
  • Event management practice
  • Cultural Festival Management
  • Exploration of corporate events

Assessment

The knowledge and skills are assessed through individual and group presentations, case studies, exams, coursework (reports, essays, portfolios and reflective blogs) and the final dissertation in the final year.

Professional accreditation

London Metropolitan University is a member of the Association of Event Management Educators. The course is also seeking professional accreditation with the Chartered Institute of Marketing, the Institute of Commercial Management and the Institute of Leadership and Management.

Collaborative and international links

Students have the opportunity to study abroad through a variety of ERASMUS links; such as NHTV Breda, Netherlands.

Careers

Event management graduates can progress their careers in a number of directions, including (but not limited to):

  • Festival and other special events management
  • Conferences, meetings & other business events
  • Marketing-related roles (e.g. experiential marketing)
  • Hospitality-related roles (e.g. venue management)

The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 240 or more UCAS points, including at least 180 from two or more A levels (or equivalent, eg BTEC National, OCR Diploma or Advanced Diploma) in academic or Business subjects. English Language and Mathematics GCSE at grade C or above (or equivalent) are also required. These requirements may be varied in individual cases.

Accelerated study

It may be possible to enter the course at levels 2/3 if you have a relevant Foundation Degree, HND or equivalent.
