Overview

The course provides an exploration of English Literature with an emphasis on literature of the modern age. The study of prose fiction, poetry and drama takes place within a discussion of cultural and historical contexts, and of diverse topics such as postmodernism, visual culture, globalisation and Romanticism. London in particular is celebrated as a centre of literary creation. Creative Writing options are available within the course.

Course contents

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint, you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Theory and Practice of Fiction
  • Theory and Practice of Poetry

  • Romantics to Victorians

Level 2 topics include:

  • Victorians to Moderns
  • Genre Fiction
  • Narrative, Myth and Metaphor

Level 3 topics include:

  • The Contemporary Novel in English

  • Literary London

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, individual and group presentations, optional creative writing and a final dissertation.

Collaborative and international links

We have a lively study abroad programme which offers the chance to take humanities modules at American and Japanese Universities such as San Diego, US and Kansai Gaidai, Japan.

Careers

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in publishing, arts and other administration, communications work and business. Students should graduate with high literary, verbal, and presentation skills, and competency with new technologies. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study in English Literature.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have 260 points from at least two A levels, a Level 3 Diploma (or equivalent), or have successfully completed an appropriate Access Course. These requirements may be varied in individual cases. Mature students with previous relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
