Overview

In recent years crime has become an increasingly central focus of public concern and political debate. This degree gives you a lively environment in which to study crime and its social regulation and control. The course consists of core modules that provide you with methodological skills and theoretical tools required to become a criminology practitioner. You will also engage with a range of specialist areas including the Criminology of Pleasure, Youth Violence and gangs and Organised Crime. Academic staff in criminology include experienced practitioners in Policing and Probation as well as active researchers. The course draws on all these skills to develop your knowledge of the institutions and apparatus that govern the field of crime. It is therefore directly relevant to a range of careers including policing, probation work and victim support.

Course contents

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits. If you take a Joint degree you study each subject for 60 credits at each level.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Criminological Theory
  • The Criminal Justice System
  • Researching Crime and Deviance
  • Criminal Law

Level 2 topics include:

  • Youth Violence and Gangs
  • Perspectives on Policing
  • Cyber Crime
  • Organised Crime
  • Quantitative and Qualitative Methods

Level 3 topics include:

  • Criminology of Pleasure
  • Serious and Serial Offenders
  • Justice Punishment and Society
  • Issues in Crime Control
  • Prisons and Penology

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, seen and unseen examinations, research projects and a final dissertation.

Careers

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities within the Criminal Justice System, in particular the Police Service, the Probation Service and areas of Victim Support. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), plus at least 260 UCAS points.
