Overview

This joint honours course gives you the opportunity to study two disciplines, providing you with a broad career choice and a range of highly transferable skills. As the focus on crime increases, you will acquire the methodological skills and theoretical tools that criminology practitioners use. You will also become prepared to enter a wide range of careers where legal knowledge and skills are useful. The course also develops skills in research, analysis, critical judgment, communication and teamwork. You will have access to the University’s excellent resources including a mock courtroom.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Introduction to Criminological Theory
  • The Criminal Justice System
  • English and EU Legal Systems
  • Criminal Law

Level 2 topics include:

  • Methods of Criminological Research
  • Crime in Context
  • Public Law and Human Rights
  • Evidence
  • Policing

Level 3 topics include:

  • Penal Policy
  • European Union Law
  • Crime Control
  • Justice, Punishment and Society
  • Project or Placement

Assessment

You are assessed via essays, seen and unseen examinations, presentations and a final dissertation.

Careers

Professional accreditation/exemption

Not a qualifying law degree for training for the legal professions.

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in a range of areas within the Criminal Justice System. The programme is also excellent preparation for further research or study.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements, you should have GCSE English at grade C or above, or Higher Diploma (or equivalent), plus at least 260 points, including at least two A levels or a level 3 Advanced Diploma.
