Overview

This course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge and skills required for a professional career in computing. The course examines the specification, design, implementation and testing of software systems and languages to professional standards within a code of ethics. The course is designed for those who want to work as software engineers, programmers, IT professionals or analysts.

Course structure

Three levels, each of 120 credits.

Level 1 topics include:

  • Logic and Mathematics
  • Programming
  • Computer Hardware and Software Architectures
  • Information Systems

Level 2 topics include:

  • Networks and Operating Systems
  • Software Engineering
  • Further Programming
  • Databases
  • Professional Issues, Ethics and Computer Law

Level 3 topics include:

  • Formal Specification and Software Architecture
  • Distributed and Internet Systems
  • Mobile Applications
  • Project
  • A designate choice from areas which may include IT Security, Advanced Database System Development, E Commerce and E Business, Network Planning and Simulation as well as a work placement

 

Assessment

Assessment is mainly via coursework, exams, in-class tests and a project dissertation with regular supportive feedback.

Professional accreditation

Professional accreditation is being sought from the British Computer Society (BCS).

 

Careers

Career opportunities

Graduates gain employment in software houses and in the financial, industrial and service sectors. Graduates can also pursue careers in research and development in scientific areas of computing.

The Faculty of Computing's World of Work (WOW) Agency offers opportunities to enhance employability skills, gain real experience and 'earn while you learn' through placements into real client-driven projects - working with business and industry.

Entry requirements

In addition to the University's standard entry requirements , you should have GCSE English and Maths at grade C or above, and at least 220 points from two or more A-levels, of which at least 120 must be from numerate subjects in science, engineering, economics or information technology. Other Level-3 qualifications accepted include:

  • BTEC National Diploma/Certificate
  • Advanced Diploma
  • Progression Diploma
  • Access to HE Diploma (60 credit) in a computing or science related subject, with at least 45 credits at level 3.

 

Extended degree course

Applicants who do not fully meet the entry requirements may be eligible to start a BSc Computing Extended Degree leading to a final award in BSc Computer Science, or may be considered for entry to the FDSc in Computing.

 

Accelerated study

If you have prior academic qualifications or relevant work-based experience you may be exempt from part of the course.
