Functions of the University Health & Safety Office

  • Providing a comprehensive health, safety and fire safety information, advice and training service to all University staff, students and visitors.
  • Supporting the University in its management of health, safety and fire safety at work by providing a planning, policy development, monitoring, auditing and review service.
  • Assisting the University Health & Safety Committee in consultation with Trades Union and other employee representatives, to monitor the implementation of University health, safety and fire safety policies.
  • Co-ordinating site safety, occupational health surveillance, and first-aid arrangements for the University.
  • Investigating and reporting on accident/incident/occupational ill-health at work on behalf of the University.
  • Taking a lead role in Business Continuity and taking an active role in the Higher Education Busines Continuity Network (HEBCoN).
  • Leading on Campus Watch initiatives within the University and liaising closely with both the City of London and the Metropolitan Police.
  • Co-ordinating the University Environmental Policy across all departments and with external partners.
  • Working with National Sector agencies such as USHA, UCEA, ISTR, LHSG, UCSF and EAUC to ensure the development and sharing of best practice within the HE Sector.
  • Liaising with external health, safety and fire safety enforcement agencies, including the HSE, LFB and Local Authorities on behalf of the University.
