Inaugural Event: Smart Contracts, AI, and the Future of Lawyering

28 April 2022

In this inaugural event of the Centre for Performance with Purpose at London Metropolitan's University Guildhall School of Business and Law, Professor Henry Blair explores smart contracts, AI and future of lawyering. Some commentators have predicted that so-called “smart contracts,” not to mention AI more generally, will reduce or even eliminate the need for lawyers in many business transactions.

In this presentation, Professor Henry Blair evaluates this prediction. He concludes that emerging technologies will alter the conventional roles that lawyers play, especially on the front end of routinized transactions. But these technologies are unlikely to replace lawyers during the negotiation of more complex transactions or during the dispute resolution process for many transactions.
