Stories We Need to Tell

A panel discussion followed by a question-and-answer session.

What is the relationship between storytelling, representation and identity? What critical and creative principles, and commercial and educational strategies do we need to diversify the stories we buy, read and tell?

The panel comprises:

  • Darren Chetty, University College London – Institute of Education

    Darren Chetty is a writer, teacher and researcher. He has published academic work on philosophy, education, racism, children’s literature and hip-hop culture. He is a contributor to the bestselling book, The Good Immigrant, edited by Nikesh Shukla and is co-author, with Jeffrey Boakye, of the forthcoming What Is Masculinity? Why Does It Matter? And Other Big Questions.

  • Yvvette Edwards, novelist

    Yvvette Edwards is the author of the highly praised A Cupboard Full of Coats, long-listed for the Man Booker Prize, short-listed for the Commonwealth Prize, and named a Kirkus Reviews Best Book of the Year. Her novel The Mother (2016) was nominated for the 48th NAACP Image Awards.

  • Dr Sunny Singh, London Metropolitan University (Chair)

    Sunny Singh is a novelist, journalist, critic, academic and is the co-creator of The Jhalak Prize. Her work includes Amitabh Bachchan, BFI Film Stars (2017) and Hotel Arcadia (2015).
