Alumni speaks out
Sangeeta studied BSc Economics and Finance at London Met and recently landed a role as a trainee in corporate trust services. We caught up with Sangeeta and asked her a few questions about her time here at the Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law.
What does your role involve?
My duties involve undertaking projects and assisting with organisation and documentation relating to transactions and streamlining deal-tracking issues (contained in spreadsheets) as well as other aspects on transaction management work. I am mainly working with spreadsheets.
How has your course helped you prepare for the world of work?
My course has helped me prepare for the world of work through its learning curve of one of the best subjects to learn if wanting to pursue a career in investment banking, especially due to the exceptional use of the Bloomberg terminals (which I personally think is great for aspiring traders). Although Tim Cleary's SQL/IBM club is not compulsory, it is actually the most practical component of my studies as it provides you with key skills in IT, which employers love!
Have you got any advice for our current and prospective students?
Start applying for jobs as early as possible, this phrase is overused but it couldn't be any more true, I've been applying constantly because I was afraid of leaving university and not having a secure job within the industry. I wish to pursue my career, and now I have secured a job and I have not actually even graduated yet!
Push yourself to learn about the industry you want to get into; this always helps as employers look for graduates who are commercially aware because it shows a sense of understanding and a keen attitude.
Graduates may find it hard to secure a job once graduating but I truly believe it could sometimes be because they don't try hard enough; join clubs, increase your skills set and get involved!
