International Red Cross visit to Social Work Team at London Met

The Social Work Department hosted a successful event with representatives from the International Cross (Uganda)

On 21 June 2016 the Social Work Department hosted a successful event with representatives from the International Cross (Uganda).

We were delighted to welcome Mr Robert Kwesiga (Secretary General, Red Cross Uganda) and Dr Sukhwinder Singh (consultant and advisor) to London Met.

The one day event included our Red Cross dignitaries meeting with the Head of the Social Work Department and the Social Work team, our BSc and MSc students, our Professor of Social Work and other colleagues from the School of Social Sciences, and members of the University’s Senior Management team.

The focus of the day was to explore London Met being the lead HEI in developing a strategic partnership with the International Red Cross office in Uganda (and other HEI’s in the USA and Switzerland). The intention is to develop an international Practice Education HUB in Uganda, and to facilitate the development of international social work practise and intercultural dialogue for both social work students and practitioners.

Dr Allister Butler, Head of the Social Work Department, said that “this is an exciting and opportunity for the Social Work Department and other disciplines at London Met to partner with the International Red Cross in developing a bespoke Practice Education HUB in Uganda, and to enhance the strategic implementation of the United Nations global sustainable goals.”
