Research in the Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages

Research in the Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages (HAL) encompasses a diverse range of subject areas and methodological approaches, and includes a growing emphasis on practice-based and applied research. The scope of research activities HAL staff and students engage in reflects the breadth of disciplines included within our undergraduate and postgraduate portfolio Undergraduate Courses / Postgraduate Courses. The department’s multifaceted character enables and encourages synergies and interdisciplinary projects in both established and emerging fields of research.

HAL offers postgraduate research opportunities, including the MRes and MPhil/PhD awards. We maintain close links to several research institutes and centres, and staff and research students regularly attend seminars, conferences, and other research events organised by the department and by the research units.

Our interest in intercultural communication and in research that supports knowledge transfer and exchange reflects our metropolitan location and our commitment to strengthen and to widen our research community.
