About the Department

WELCOME TO THE DEPARTMENT OF HUMANITIES, ARTS AND LANGUAGES

The Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages has recently merged with The Department of Education to become the Faculty of Humanties, Arts, Languages and Education (HALE). We welcome the increased opportunities and synergies the Faculty structure will enable, and are currently developing a HALE webpage with information about course offerings, staff profiles, research, news and events.

There are over 2,500 student FTEs within the Humanities, Arts and Languages (HAL) subject areas, and these students are from a wide range of local, national and international backgrounds. There are over 100 full time and many more part time academic staff teaching on high quality undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. These programmes include:

English Language Courses (Academic and General English, Business English, IELTS Programmes, Teacher Training and tailor-made courses, Pronunciation courses)

International Foundation Programme

Junior Year Abroad

Corporate Language Services

Short Courses

The Department has a strong research profile, and much of the research is of national and international renown. We aim to provide a supportive working environment, where you will receive expert tuition and a range of exciting courses and units to study offering flexibility and choice. You will be encouraged to explore a range of future work opportunities through the creative and cultural industries, language industries to public, private or voluntary sector employment.

The Department offers courses on two sites and works with other departments within the University, for example the Departments of Art, Media and Design, Management, Applied Social Sciences and Law, Governance and International Relations. This enables us to offer enhanced opportunities to students at all levels.

We hope you will join us and we look forward to working with you.
