Initial Teacher Training

About us

By choosing to train as a teacher with London Metropolitan University you will be joining a powerful partnership of diverse London teachers and schools who work with the University to offer an exciting and challenging course to launch your career. Previous students have told us that you will be exceptionally well supported by "inspirational" (Ofsted 2011) tutors who act as "critical friends". Our trainees attain highly with 99 per cent achieving an Ofsted good or outstanding grade by the end of the course. Employment prospects are excellent, with many students offered employment in their placement schools.

London Metropolitan University works in partnership with hundreds of schools and children’s centres across London, and occasionally beyond. Our partnership contract sets out a clear division of responsibility between schools and the University, and recognises that when student teachers are on placement, the mentor in school assumes the role of the main trainer. At that point, the University tutor assumes the role of moderator and is concerned with quality assurance across the partnership.

At the heart of our model of partnership is a professional respect for the teachers and other professionals with whom we work. We want to strengthen our partnerships, so we move beyond a placement model and develop deeper and more mutually beneficial relationships with schools and children’s centres. This means building stronger connections between institutions, improving our communication, and broadening the ways in which staff collaborate – both involving University staff in wider activities in schools and children’s centres and ensuring teachers and others are involved in University-based activities.
