Doctor of Education (EdD)

About the EdD

The Doctor of Education (EdD) is an innovative, part-time programme with a strong focus on social justice and social inclusion. It is located within the successful research Institute for Policy Studies in Education (IPSE) at London Metropolitan University

Comparable to the PhD in terms of scale and rigour, it is aimed at busy professionals who want to undertake a substantial investigation into an area of current professional practice in education

 

Studying for the EdD

The core teaching (for the first two years) takes place through one intensive two-day session (Friday and Saturday) and three evening seminars held each term, alongside one-to-one tutorial support in order to fit in around the needs of your busy schedules

There is also the opportunity to work with groups of colleagues with similar interests. The time expected to obtain the EdD ranges from four to six years

 

Year One

During the first year students will take three taught modules:

  • Education Policy and Social Justice: An Overview (30 credits)
  • Introduction to Theories and Methods as an Educational Researcher: Research Methodology Part 1 (30 credits)
  • Evaluating Research and Reflecting on Practice (30 credits)

Year Two

During the second year there will be a further three taught modules concentrating on preparation for the forthcoming thesis project

  • Policy, Practice and Social Justice in Educational Institutions (30 credits)
  • Research Proposal and Presentation (30 credits)
  • Conducting Educational Resaerch: Research Methodology Part 2 (30 credits)

From Year Three

From Year three students will be working on their thesis of 40-50,000 words, individually supervised by joint supervisors (360 credits)

 

Academic Resources

The EdD course benefits from its location in the Institute for Policy Studies in Education, where you can work alongside active research projects and develop further links with other researchers at the University

Entry Requirements

You will normally hold a relevant Master's degree obtained from a UK university or overseas equivalent.

You will also have acquired at least three years full-time experience of employment in a relevant professional area
