London Met researcher wins prestigious lectureship

Dr Sohail Mushtaq wins recognition from the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry for early career research.

Date: 7 October 2016

Dr Sohail Mushtaq, a Postdoctoral Research Fellow in the Centre for Communications Technology at London Met’s School of Computing, has been named the winner of the 2016 Emerging Investigator Lectureship by the Journal of Analytical Atomic Spectrometry (JAAS).

Launched last year to coincide with the journal’s 30th anniversary, the lectureship recognises and supports emerging scientists working in the area of atomic spectrometry in the early stages of their independent career.

As a winner of the lectureship, Dr Mushtaq will present his research at a relevant high-profile international meeting and receive a contribution of up to £2000 to cover expenses. He will also be awarded a certificate and invited to contribute a paper to JAAS.

Dr Mushtaq’s creative research focuses on glow discharge spectroscopy, a technique used to analyse the composition of solid materials, and examining how small amounts of molecular gasses, such as oxygen, can skew results.

Analysis by glow discharge spectroscopy is essential in the development of new materials and surface coatings and Dr Mushtaq’s findings could lead to the production of new alloys for aerospace applications and high wear-resistant coatings in the automotive industry.

Dr Mushtaq was selected as the winner by the JAAS Editorial Board based on the originality, quality, impact and significance of his research.

As a winner of JAAS Emerging Investigator Lectureship Dr Mushtaq wishes to thank the JAAS Editorial Board for his selection and also Professor Edward Steers, Professor Bal Virdee and Professor Juliet Pickering for their continuous support and encouragement.
