London Metropolitan University Students’ Union wins award for sustainability action

London Met’s Students’ Union has been awarded a Green Impact Bronze award, reflecting students’ dedication to positive environmental action over the last year.

Date: 11 August 2015

Earlier this year, London Met’s Student Union joined Green Impact, an environmental award accreditation scheme that aims to make the University more sustainable, and raise awareness of environmental issues amongst staff and students.

The Students’ Union has since achieved the bronze accreditation, which required them to fulfil a total of 12 criteria that included lobbying the University on the environment and successfully supporting a national day of action.

This is the first time London Met has taking part in the scheme, with the efforts led by Marco Brunone, the Students’ Union’s Hub Officer for the Guildhall Faculty of Business and Law.

"As part of our corporate social responsibility agenda, Green Impact is a perfect way to disclose our efforts in tacking environmental issues,” commented Marco.

“The award scheme gives us the opportunity to engage, expand and measure our performance by giving us the correct accreditation for the contribution on the field of environmental sustainability."

From Bronze to Gold

Over 100 students’ unions across the UK took part in the scheme this year, taking actions like setting up a charity shop on campus, running biodiversity sessions with local schools, lobbying for a more eco-campus and promoting sustainability across the wider community.

“The Student’s Union is proud to adopt sustainable actions as part of our social corporate responsibility agenda,” Marco added.

“Sustainability means increasing the positives and decreasing the negative aspects of social, economic and environmental issues. Green Impact is a great way for students, staff and the community to work together in addressing these environmental issues.”

Proud Achievement

Green Impact is managed by the National Union of Students (NUS).

Piers Telemacque, the NUS’s Vice President for Society and Citizenship commented on the Students’ Union’s achievement:

“It’s so inspiring to see thousands of students using Green Impact to shape the sustainable future they want to see, and London Metropolitan University Students’ Union has been a massive part of that. They should be so proud.”
