Aims of the course

Media play a pivotal role in shaping our everyday lives, our cultures, our encounters with others and our perception of the world. World leading researchers in the field of media studies will lead your study on a course that will enhance your critical understanding of the way media function in society, the structures, economics and practices of the media industries, the way they are regulated, the transformation to a digital, information society and the way that media inform our cultural identities.

The course is research-led, providing students with innovative and cutting-edge research on the media industries and an engagement with current debates within the media studies field and policy arena. The course covers a range of media fields and technologies, including television, film, digital media, journalism and examines institutions from Hollywood to Pinewood and from Bollywood to Silicon Valley.

This course aims to enable students to understand the current digital media landscape in an historical and analytical context. Students will learn a mixture of theory and practice, with the course’s focus on theory supplemented by offering a choice of industry-engaged modules that provide opportunities for learning industry-valued skills together with interaction and experience with media practitioners.

Entry requirements

Good Honours degree or equivalent. If you have lower qualifications but substantial relevant work experience you are also encouraged to apply. You will be asked to provide a written portfolio summarising your work history and showing how it relates to the aims of the course. Applicants must normally have an IELTS English Language test score of 6.5 or above to gain admission onto the course.

Course structure

You will take 5 core modules, 1 optional module and a dissertation of 15,000 words.

One option may be taken as a free module from other Masters degrees in the University.

You will be required to complete a dissertation of 12,000-15,000 words, equivalent to three modules.

Assessment

Assessment methods include essays, research projects, oral presentations, reports, briefs, computer projects, DVDs/videos and examinations.

Career opportunities

Successful completion of this course offers improved career opportunities in the areas of media production and management, media research, media policy decision-making. The programme is also excellent preparation for further higher level research or study.
