School Food Catering Summit: The Local Authority Caterers Association (LACA) held a conference at the Queen Elizabeth II Centre, London, on 25 March. The aim was to influence the imminent introduction of nutritional standards for secondary school meals.

'The School Fringe report' and associated Policy Options paper was  distributed shortly to all 646 MPs as part of the policy follow up to the Summit.

New Food Policy for Scotland: Jack Winkler contributed to the final session of the working group on Food Choices, on 2 March, in Edinburgh.

"Iron and Disease", lecture by Dr Kenneth White of the Institute for Health Research and Policy, on 11 March, at 6.30pm, in the Henry Thomas Room, as part of the RIG Public Series.

"Policies Towards Omega-3 Fatty Acids": A draft version of London Metropolitan's response to the Food Standards Agency's review of fish consumption was presented by Jack Winkler as a seminar in the School of Food Biosciences at Reading University on 11 March.

Nutrition Policy @ University College London: Professor Winkler's 2009 nutrition policy module in the Department of Public Health finished Feb 25.

* "Health Eating in Schools" The importance of shops on The School Fringe in schoolchildren's diets was discussed by Prof J T Winkler at a conference in London on 29 October, at which Ed Balls the Secretary of State for Education gave his response to the Unit's research.

* "Tackling Childhood Obesity: Lessons from New York City", a free public meeting to launch the collaboration between City University of New York and London Metropolitan University was held at 6pm on Wednesday, 15 October. Details .

* "Feeding Young Minds" conference, organised by Food and Behaviour Research, at the Said Business School, Oxford, on 3 October 2008, was addressed by Prof Michael Crawford (IBCHN) and Prof Jack Winkler (NPU). * Prof Jack Winkler spoke on The School Fringe project at the conference, "Healthy School Foods: Eating and Learning", organised by the Westminster Education Forum, London, on 25 September 2008


* "The Role of Essential Fatty Acids in Paediatric Nutrition". Conference by The Institute of Brain Chemistry and Human Nutrition (IBCHN). 9-10 September 2008.


* Food Standards Agency (FSA) at London Metropolitan. Gill Fine, Director of Consumer Choice and Dietary Health at the FSA, was the keynote speaker at the conference, "Food Undressed: Clean Labels and Creative Challenges", jointly organised by the Institute of Food Science and Technology (IFST) and the School of Human Sciences (HHS), in the Graduate Centre, on 10 September 2008.


* Prof Jack Winkler spoke to the Danish Bacon and Meat Council in London on developments in UK nutrition policy on 10 September 2008.

 

* Dr Pedro Ordunez, Director of the University Hospital Cienfuegos and Associate Professor at the National School of Public Health in Havana, visited the university for meetings with IBCHN, NPU and the International Institute for the Study of Cuba, to organise future co-operation. He is the author of recent papers on the decline of obesity and the improvement in mortality rates in Cuba following food rationing during the Special Period.
