Role

Senior lecturer; course leader MA Primary ELT: Policy & Practice; member of Institute for the Study of European Transformations; Director: Early language learning in Europe research project (ELLiE) - a European Commission-funded Project under the Lifelong Learning Programme 2007-2013.

Janet spent some years as a UK primary class teacher whilst developing her interest in language and culture. Having taken up an ESRC scholarship award to complete an MA in English language, she then moved to work in Central Europe as an EFL specialist. Two years were spent in Poland (Link Language school, Gliwice; Jagiellonian University Teacher Training Dept, Krakow) followed by a further four years in Hungary (national primary EFL advisor, British Council/Hungarian Ministry of Education).

After returning to the UK she completed her doctorate in the field of Primary ELT Policy studies and came to London Met as a senior lecturer in TESOL in the same year. She has undertaken young learner consultancies in Czech Republic, Poland, Latvia, Italy, China and Vietnam. Her research interests include the impact of globalisation on English language teaching, the politics of primary foreign language policy and primary EFL/FL teaching.

In January 2008 she jointly organised a global conference in Bangalore, India (IATEFL YLSIG conference: The Way Forward: learning from international experience of TEYL) focusing on trends in primary EFL policy making. In December 2007 she was awarded a three-year European Commission research grant to lead an international team investigating the recent implementation of early foreign language learning in schools in Europe (ELLiE). She currently supervises one PhD student researching in the field of primary ELT in Greece.
