Research Degree Programmes in the Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages

Research Degrees in the Department of Humanities, Arts and Languages (HAL) can be taken in a number of areas including Humanities, Media Arts, Translation Studies and Teaching for Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL). Generally, they involve taught provision (the quantity of which varies between awards) and supervision of a project or dissertation (the size or length of which also varies between awards). Lecturers in the department are knowledgeable, experienced, well published and research active. Departmental supervisory and teaching expertise is both detailed and broad, facilitating specific as well as interdisciplinary study. HAL Research degrees take five forms: Master of Arts (MA), Master of Research (MRes), Master of Philosophy or Doctor of Philosophy (MPhil/PhD), Professional Doctorate and PhD by prior output. Aimed at developing academic research skills, the MRes combines taught modules with a large self-directed research element

The degree is aimed at those wishing to work in research or progress to PhD
