The course is mainly based at the The Cass (The Sir John Cass Department of Art, Media and Design) with its superb facilities, excellent library, industry-standard labs and work areas in 2D and 3D art & design, computing, video editing, photography, printmaking and ceramics.  The Cass is located within a vibrant community of galleries, designers, artists, museums and cultural industries that surround the City campus on the East London City fringe.

The Art, Media and Design IFP gives you the chance to engage, explore and experiment with a diverse range of creative subjects, and build up a portfolio of skills and experience. This provides the background necessary for entry into all undergraduate courses offered by the Department of Art, Media and Design.

Below: Students have an opportunity to show their work.

Students study modules from the following, depending on language level:

Foundation English: Writing; listening; reading and speaking skills for university study; Presentations; Relevant vocabulary and grammar; evaluation and analysis; writing for research purposes; essay construction and debate; language for your subject.

Foundation Studies:  Study skills; Reading and research strategies; Essay and report writing; giving seminars; reflection on learning.

Project: Range of Art, Media, Design projects with variable aim, structure and duration; student responsibility for definition, implementation and development increases as the course proceeds; projects require substantial participation from students; independent inquiry and discovery; framework allows for original thinking and development; balances practical skills built up in Techniques module.

Techniques: skill-based technical development for Art, Media, Design; materials usage; quality; considerations of care, appropriateness and endeavour; intrinsic formal and structural qualities of different media.

Workbook: Visual journal used to integrate project related and independent work; assignments and field trips; develop methods, materials, processes and ideas; critical reflection and evaluation; uses drawing, painting, photography, collage, transcriptions, recordings, notations and commentary.

Critical & Contextual Studies: The module provides an introduction to a range of cultural and contextual practices and is diagnostic, helping students identify those areas of degree level study most appropriate to their needs, aspirations and abilities.  It is intended to prepare students for critical and theoretical work in higher education. The module is focused on asking questions, specifically questions that bear on architecture, art, design and media in the broad sense.
