DASS Media Arts Exhibition Space Opens
A new and exciting exhibition space called b-39, based at London Met’s
Department of Applied Social Sciences, recently showcased BA and MA
Digital Media graduate work. On show was animation, film, web design
and installations.
This inaugural show was concerned with the impact of new media on
society. Postgraduate students were represented by work produced as
part of the module Responsive Environments. The response was
interactive exhibits that went beyond cause and effect, and reflected
specific social and cultural contexts.
All work on show made use of sensors, to allow visitors to interact
physically with the exhibits. Choosing the theme of movement, James
Connor created a game that involved players walking along a surface to
control it. "The game has a stealth theme, where the player must get to
the end of a trench that is projected in front of them without being
noticed by the spotlight and without stepping on a landmine," said
James.
Chris Lane, responsible for turning b-39 into an exhibition space,
said: "Looking to the future, the plan is for b-39 to develop a
programme in which the relationship between new media communication
methods and wider questions of society and social policy are explored."
