I teach modules in introductory Sociology and Social Theory. My main teaching interest lies in introducing Sociology as a discipline and examining its uses.
My recent research interests also include exploring the uses of Sociology. In particular, I am interested in how sociological knowledge is actually produced and understood as being different from everyday knowledge or common-sense.
Most recently, I've become very interested in developing the concept of 'public sociology' across the Department. In that sense I teach mostly around the theme of the 'Uses and Abuses' of Sociology. I'm also interested in the use of visual data in sociological research - in particular the use of photographs.
Students sometimes get rather anxious studying social theory. However, the way I like students to view it is in terms of an 'exploration' or 'journey'. You're never quite sure what you find and there always something for everyone!
In my spare time (?) my main interests are to be found on, or more precisely attempting to get up, large hills. I enjoy Hill-walking and photography. I also make a good audience for a very musical family.
As Academic Leader for the Social Sciences, I also lead a very talented team of staff and represent their interests on various Department and University Committees.
