I have been Professor of Social Policy at London Metropolitan University since 1996. I was a Lecturer in Applied Social Studies at the University of Warwick (1975-83), and Senior/Principal Lecturer in Social Sciences at London South Bank University (1984-96).

I have researched and published across a diverse range of topics, including housing, urban regeneration, racism, globalisation, political economy of welfare and cross national social policy analysis. I was director of a project within the ESRC Cities Programme (1998-2001) analysing particular instances of economic and social activity in Inner North East London which counter and reverse processes of social exclusion and economic inactivity, focusing on minority ethnic business; new communities of visual and performance artists; black voluntary organisations; and large community sector regeneration organisations.

I coordinated the University of North London’s preparation for and submission in Social Policy and Administration for the Research Assessment Exercise, RAE 2001. We submitted 12 staff for assessment and achieved a 3a rating.

My current teaching includes an introduction to social policy themes and issues;social problems; ‘race’, ethnicity and social policy; comparative social policy; intercultural studies.

I was one of the founders of the journal Critical Social Policy in 1980 and have been a member of the Editorial Board ever since. I am currently the business manager and production editor for the journal.
