John joined the University in 1992 from Middlesex University where he was responsible for practice learning between 1989 and 1992. Before qualifying as a social worker in 1981 he worked in residential and day care settings with children in care, the elderly and ex-psychiatric patients. As a qualified social worker he worked in fieldwork as a child protection worker and as an Approved Social Worker (ASW). Throughout this period he developed an interest in student supervision and obtained the Practice Teaching Award in 1994. His specialist teaching interests are in Child Development, Theory and Practice and Anti-Discriminatory Practice. John was the Programme Convenor for the North London Practice Teaching Consortium between 1994 and 2001. He is a regular contributor to 'The Journal of Practice Teaching' and has published research into the practice assessment of practice teachers. He is currently responsible for promoting the social work education programmes with social work agencies and in co-ordinating and managing student practice learning.
