Child & Woman Abuse Studies Unit

The Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit was founded in 1987 to develop feminist research methodologies, theory and practice, especially in relation to connections between forms of violence against women and children. CWASU now has a national and international reputation for its research, training and consultancy work, which involves a creative combination of large and small scale research projects, training, policy development and networking, bridging the worlds of academia, policy, practice and activism. Recent projects include:

  • A study into intimate partner homicide in Ireland.
  • A feasibility study to assess the possibilities, opportunities and needs to standardise national legislation on violence against women, violence against children and sexual orientation violence across EU member states.
  • An exploration of response to rape in West Yorkshire – a partnership project with Durham University.
  • An evaluation of four London Independent Domestic Violence Advocacy (IDVA) schemes in London.
  • Exploring the links between teenage pregnancy and non-consensual sex.
  • An evaluation of the nia project’s sexual exploitation prevention programme

Current projects include:

  • An ESRC funded project on domestic violence perpetrator programmes - in partnership with Durham University and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
  • A longitudinal study on how women and children rebuild their lives after domestic violence, in partnership with Solace Women’s Aid.
