Employability

An internship opportunity:
Oak Foundation Human
Rights Internship Programme
Some of the professional bodies who recognise our courses. The National Youth Agency, The England Standards Board, The Nursing and Midwifery Council, The Chartered Institute of Housing and the General Social Care Council.

As our name suggests, the Applied Social Sciences at London Met is firmly focussed on the application knowledge. In practice this means that we create extensive connections between our teaching and research, and the 'world of work'.

Applied Social Sciences are committed to maximizing the employability of our graduates. We also work to provide a range of services to employers.

We do this by shaping our employability curriculum through dialogue with partners in the public, community and business sectors and by creating an interface that allows employers and students to directly engage with each other.

This approach to building the careers of our students includes:

  • A very close relationship between the research and consultancy work of staff and the activity that takes place in the classroom
  • Professional accreditation and recognition for many of our courses
  • Representation of industry professionals on course validation panels - to guarantee that our courses are relevant
  • The maintenance of strong relationships with employers and professional bodies
  • Events where we invite employers to tell us about their needs
  • A strand of employability linked modules running through our undergraduate core curriculum
  • Employability embedded within all modules through the underlying 'applied' nature of our work
  • Knowledge transfer projects involving our students working with industry partners on employer specific problems
  • Support for patterns of study that allow students to study and work at the same time, through foundation degrees, part-time and associate modes of study, as well as work-based learning
  • A dedicated work placement office
  • Work placement opportunities embedded within every undergraduate course
  • Regular presentations by employers in lectures and seminars
  • Opportunities to apply learning and research to ‘live’ real-world assessment projects
  • Regular public events that bring together our students with leading figures working in industry and public service
  • A focus on innovation and social enterprise in our curriculum

Our services to employers include:

  • Short courses and a wider programme of continuing professional development
  • Bespoke courses negotiated with employers delivered on their premises or ours
  • Locating of skilled students and graduates to work on specific knowledge transfer projects
  • Access to funding to subsidise knowledge transfer activities
  • Networking and consultation events
  • Consultancy and commissioned research
  • Our contribution to broad debates in the field of community, public and voluntary sector employment through the extensive research activity of our staff
