Science Centre
Take the Science Centre Virtual Tour

Our Science Centre offers a unique learning experience for students at all levels of their studies, including research. The University has invested over £30 million in developing the Science Centre, which offers unparalleled facilities for teaching and research. One key feature is the SuperLab, giving students a cutting edge experience of learning science. Each student will have their own bench space equipped with a computer and headphones so students can receive guidance as they carrying out their experiments. There are 12 teaching terminals so multiple classes can take place simultaneously.
The facilities in the Science Centre will provide an opportunity for students to develop their understanding of the scientific basis of human activity by working with state of the art equipment.
Students will be able to use some of our extensive equipment eg a haematology analyser, scanning spectrophotometers and a clinical chemistry analyser both in classes and in completing research projects at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. A significant part of the students' practical experiences will be in project-based teams that extend across disciplines.
Students will also have access to the spectroscopy and chromatography labs allowing hands-on use of the UV-visible spectrometers Flow TIR AA ICP GC HPLC systems. Mass Spectroscopy and GC-MS CC-MS and N Magnetic Resonance (500 MHz) systems are also available for more detailed analysis.
Sports and nutrition students will be able to study the physiological effects of exercise, collect data for extended analyses and investigate the inter-relationships between exercise, health and nutrition and verify these through appropriate analyses in our specialist nutritional physiology and food technology labs. Students will have access to specialist equipment including a Cybex machine, Bod Pod, Tanita body scanner and a DEXA (Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry) bone densitometer.
Forensic science students benefit from the use of the forensic lab which has facilities for blood splatter analysis, and specialist equipment for example, a superglue fuming cabinet and an ESDA machine (Electrostatic Vacuum Box).
Research
The new centre provides excellent opportunities for research (including a Cat3 lab) at all levels and across all subjects. The Faculty of Life Sciences research pages can be found at www.londonmet.ac.uk/depts/fls/research
Clinics
The Science Centre also provides many possibilities for studying the health of the local community which benefits participants and provides data for teaching and research. The Faculty of life sciences health clinics’ pages can be found at www.londonmet.ac.uk/depts/fls/clinics
Sports facilities
The Science Centre also houses a state of the art gym and sports facilities which is set to become an Olympic training venue for both the fencing and basketball. The University sports pages can be found at www.londonmet.ac.uk/sports
