Welcome to the School of Human Sciences
Welcome to the School of Human Sciences, which brings together the University's science based health related provision and the essential scientific disciplines that underpin such provision.
The School comprises of some 70 full-time academic and 20 Technical staff and together we focus on activities that consider the factors that influence human health and wellbeing to those, which are closely allied to medicine and approved by the Health Professions Council. A holistic approach to individual and community well being lies at the core of the School's activities and key scientific disciplines such as Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physiology, Microbiology are offered at degree level and provide essential underpinning for the more applied courses.
The School has developed close links with a number of private and public sector organisations through the development of joint research projects, offering specialist consultancy and engaging in knowledge transfer schemes. This work has helped the School to maintain a high profile with perspective employers of our graduates.
The majority of School’s undergraduate and postgraduate provision has professional accreditation and our main strengths lie in offering specialist teaching and research in key subject areas, such as biomedical sciences, pharmaceutical sciences, nutrition & dietetics and sports science & therapy.
The University has invested over £30 million pounds in developing the Science Centre, which offers unparalleled facilities for teaching and research. One the key features of this facility is the Super Lab housing 270 individual workstations, equipped with full computer and video facilities enabling students to develop their scientific skills through interaction with teaching materials delivered via laboratory sessions, IT environments, Problem Based and collaborative learning.
The Science Centre also provides excellent opportunities for staff to carry out high-level research work across a range of subject areas and this ensures that the curriculum offered to students is up-to-date and meets the needs of employers.
