Run by Dr Vittoria Ardino, Prof Antonia Bifulco and Prof Julia Davidson

Childhood violent trauma and PTSD in forensic settings: focus on assessment and treatment workshop is organised jointly by the European Society for Traumatic Stress Studies (ESTSS) and Centre for Abuse and Trauma Studies (CATS). The workshop will be run by Antonia Bifulco, Professor of Health and Social Care, Royal Holloway University of London (CATS); Julia Davidson, Professor of Criminology and Sociology, University of Kingston (CATS); and Vittoria Ardino, Senior Lecturer in Forensic Psychology, London Metropolitan University and Board Member of ESTSS.

The workshop will introduce attendees to the main psychological and criminological issues underlying the definition, measurement and treatment of childhood violent trauma and PTSD in forensic settings with relevant reference to research. The workshop will also introduce attendees with a specific instrument to assess childhood abuse (Childhood Experience of Care and Abuse interview and questionnaire). This will be illustrated through case material to identify severity and definition of abuse in relation to emotional and behavioural disorder. Attendees will be also introduced to PTSD and the concept of “perpetration-induced” traumatic stress and to the relationship between PTSD and criminal behaviour. Narratives of traumatized offenders will be used to challenge attendees’ knowledge about the interplay between trauma re-enactment, chronic PTSD and re-offending risk. A critical review of treatment for sex offenders will be provided, utilising descriptions of treatment practice case study material and research evaluations. An overview of new treatment practice with Internet sex offenders will also be provided.

Learning outcomes will be met through frontal lectures and interactive activities. On successful completion of this workshop, attendees will be able to: evaluate the impact of childhood violent trauma (sexual, physical and psychological) on victims and offenders; understand standardised assessment of childhood abuse and its implications for practitioners in criminal justice and social care; assess PTSD in offender populations; critically evaluate available treatments for sexual offenders — with focus upon the cognitive behavioural approach.

Attendance will be accredited for ESTSS General Certificate in Psychotraumatology (for ESTSS members)

Cost: £150. Concession to ESTSS members (£125)
