Research
The majority of our research in education was judged to be of national
excellence in the latest Research Assessment Exercise. Many staff in
the Department are actively involved in research, and we have a
thriving Masters programme.
The Department is closely linked with the work of two Research
Institutes from within the University : The Institute for Policy
Studies in Education (IPSE) and the Working Lives Research Institute.
This Institute incorporates a range of activities including projects on
teacher supply and retention (in partnership with 22 local education
authorities); a trans-European network on children's identity and
citizenship; and IMPACT an internationally renowned project seeking to
promote and support home-school links in numeracy and literacy.
The Working Lives Research Institute works in partnership with all who
wish to understand and challenge discrimination in and surrounding
people's working lives.
Both institutes hold regular seminar series within the University and
have built up international networks with scholars working in the
fields of education and employment. Their resources include the Trades
Union Congress and Library Collections, and The Women's Library at the
University.
