Media, Information and Communications

Research

I am interested in cultural analysis of emotions, body, gender, sexuality, subjectivity and life history research. I have been involved in a number of community based collaborative life history research projects.

I am a member of the editorial board of the journal Oral History and the Oral History Society.

Teaching

I am Course Leader for MA Life History Research. I teach the following postgraduate modules: Collecting Life Histories, Making Life Histories - Analysis and Media Production, Media Audiences.

  • Family Matters: Somali Theatre Project (working with colleagues from London Metropolitan University and Oxford House Youth Project to research and represent, via a theatre piece, intergenerational issues affecting the Somali community in Tower Hamlets, funded by Arts Aimhigher and LB Tower Hamlets), 2007

  • Refugee Community Histories Project (documenting the contribution of refugee communities to the culture and economy of London since 1951, project partner with the Evelyn Oldfield Unit and Museum of London, funded by HLF), 2005/06

Conference Organisation

I helped organise and co-host the Oral History Society’s Annual Conferences ‘Talking Community Histories’ (2001) and ‘Making Community Oral Histories’ (2007) at London Metropolitan University.
