Student Feedback - And How We Responded

The National Student Survey takes place every year in which final year students are encouraged to give feedback from their experiences as a student. Here are some points made by students in the Faculty of Computing and how the University responsed. You said, we did

  1. FoC has responded to a student request to publicise where key FoC software is installed in labs; we did this at:
    /depts/cctm/student_labs.cfm

  2. Post-graduate students asked for a dedicated PG lab in the new Tower Building area - we persuaded Estates to allow us to designate T7-01 as PG with privileged access.

  3. Similarly, PG students asked for the late opening of the Tower Lab T2-20 until 9.30pm so that evening class students could get a similar time for their modules as day-time students. Again, Estates responded positively and agreed to the late opening on certain days of the week.

  4. Students have asked for additional information to be put into WebLearn generally - all modules now have at least the module booklet and most have considerably more information.

  5. Students have asked for details of staff office hours; during the teaching semesters this is on office doors, in module booklets and on the web at: /depts/cctm/staff-pages/staff-availability.cfm

  6. Students want more connections to industry - we now have monthly Student Enterprise Workshops. This included a visit to Apple HQ. 50 plus students, alumni, employers & staff attend every month, and we now have a record number of students on short work placements

  7. Students asked about professional body accreditation for our courses - we have obtained IMA accreditation for Maths courses and IET accreditation of our engineering and networking degrees; and started the process for BCS and SkillSet.

  8. Students have commented on feedback - we have improved feedback arrangements with early draft course work comments and the 'FoC three week promise' and established a regular meeting every semester between the StARS and the Dean, ensuring that we listen to the feedback from the StARS and respond to them.

  9. Maths Clinics to support students using FoC Maths staff.

  10. FoC has two new dedicated computer labs (70 stations) for IT Security and Computer Forensics, and for Multimedia, with a suite of Apple Macs.

  11. Students have requested software for their own PCs; in response FoC has a partnership with Microsoft for free downloads of popular programs like Visual Studio and MS Project. See the details at the top of the PCs and Software available page

  12. We have open access on Wednesdays for Communications Technology Labs for student projects or private study

Do you have any comments about this feedback and responses, or any requests for changes you would like to see? If so please send them to Peter Chalk p.chalk@londonmet.ac.uk
