Employability - Building Careers

The Faculty of Computing is committed to educating highly employable graduates and to encourage the development of students' employability and entrepreneurship. We have a number of programmes and initiatives that support students in building their careers and improving their employability and professional skills. These include:

 

Employability Skills Module
Students learning employability skillsAll undergraduate courses have an Employment Skills module built in. This module prepares students for employability and includes 'people' skills (eg team working, presentation delivery skills, client relationships, attending meetings) and 'environmental' issues (eg health and safety, business ethics, Intellectual Property Rights). It is designed to enable students to conduct critical self-analysis and reflection and develop a range of employability skills. The module will develop appropriate skills needed by graduates to compete in the labour market. It will also link to Personal Development Planning development through a reflective process. In addition this module will further develop skills in research, communication, presentation, taking the initiative and working in teams. It will also develop reflective learning and action planning. Student Placements

Students all have the option of taking the "Work Placement for Professional Experience" module. It enables students to undertake an appropriate short period of professional activity related to their course at 'near graduate' level with a business or community organisation, and to gain credit for their achievements. There will be academic supervisors as well as a supervisor at the placement who will guide and assist students to build their career. For more details about this module see:

Industrial Liaison Group
The Industrial Liaison Group is an industrial advisory group for the faculty. Its advice and ideas are regarded as key to ensuring that the faculty's courses, research and knowledge transfer activities are highly relevant and responsive to the needs of industry. Final Project/Dissertation
Many of the final projects or final dissertations are highly practical and we encourage students to get a real client and work within a real life scenario. It provides an opportunity for students to extend their studies in a particular field of interest that appertains to their future career aspirations.

 

Student Enterprise Workshop
The Faculty of Computing has a monthly Student Enterprise Workshop (SEW). These aim to make our students more aware of what is happening in industry,Student Enterprise Workshop SEW and benefit from industrial liaison by inviting speakers from our industrial partners, our alumni and other businesses and organisations.It provides a link between our industrial contacts and our students for their mutual benefit and improves our students' employability through their interaction with industry. The workshops are highly interactive, speakers will bring their experiences and inform our students about their industry, and share a few Q&A sessions over a cup of tea or coffee. So far, we have had speakers from Microsoft, Cisco, BATS Europe and Make Me Believe Ltd, etc. For more details contact Yanguo Jing

 

World of Work Agency
The World of Work Agency sets up short term work positions for students in industry. So far, more than 30 students have been employed by the agency in over 70 projects. This is a great opportunity for our students to gain some employment experience and use the skills and knowledge they have learnt on our courses. For more details contact Alan Stuart

 

IMPACT
Some students from the Faculty of Computing initiated IMPACT - a student run British Computer Society group, supported by the Faculty, that focuses on employability. It organizes events and invites speakers to promote internships and work placement opportunities, as well as a series of programs and events aimed to develop the interpersonal and business skills of our students. Career Development and Employment Services Unit
The university's Career Development and Employment Services Unit provides a high quality service to improve students' employability. It provides support on CVs and cover letter writing, preparing for interviews and psychometric tests, as well as providing internship opportunities to all kinds of graduates . There are regular events organized by the unit.
