Current Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Module Convenor for two MSc modules: Data warehouse and Data Mining (CCP105N) and Large scale Object Oriented Database Software Development (CCP103N) and a BSc module: Database Applications Development (CC3017).
  • Research Track:
    Professor Marir has amassed over 15 years considerable research achievements and experience on fundamental research questions related to database systems, information and knowledge management, data mining, neural network, case-based reasoning and content-based indexing and retrieval. He is member of editorial board for two journals and member of programme committee for five international conferences. He has published around eighty peer-reviewed papers and has supervised ten PhD students to completion. He has been involved in several EU and UK funded research projects applying IT to the domains of transport, construction, health and environment (see list below).

    Research Interest and RAE2008 ranking:
    Professor Marir research interest evolves around knowledge management, content-based indexing and retrieval, case-based reasoning, e-workflow & business process modelling, semantic web, learning objects, data mining, e-government, e-health and e-science. His research output was judged to be of International Standards in the last RAE2008.

    PhD Supervisions:
    Professor Marir has supervised ten PhD students to their PhD study completion. The PhD researches have been undertaken in the domain of knowledge management & e-workflow modelling, scientific citation indexes & decision support systems, data warehousing query optimisation, content-based information retrieval methods, surveillance/security systems, document management.     Currently, Professor Marir is supervising seven PhD students in the domains of e-government, knowledge management systems, mapping relational databases to semantic web, dynamic simulation for modelling university processes, methods of real time testing for embedded fault tolerant systems and the effects of culture, religion and lifestyle on strategic decision making.     Consultancy and Research Projects:
    Professor Marir has been the main or co-investigator in more than fifteen EU and UK consultancy/funded research projects (below most of the recent projects). These research projects have entailed extensive knowledge and data modelling and integration, knowledge management and also theoretical analyses of both experimental and computational data.

    • £120K Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) funding for the development of a dynamic search engine in collaboration with NBV Limited (July 2010-July 2012)
    • £10K funded Knowledge Connect (Oct. 2009 - March 2010) an investigation on the development of a mobile-based Proactive Anti-Obesity System (m-PAS) for Cal2Cal
    • £10K funded Knowledge Connect (Nov. 2009 - Apr. 2010) for the development of an Interactive Virtual Training for Good Vibes
    • ARISTOTLE project for the development of Rhetorical Structure Theory enhanced search engine (2010)
    • VIGILANT2 project for intelligent CCTV video surveillance to recognise suspicious event (2010).
    • AUNT-SUE and VISIT (£199K EPSRC funded 2007-2009) for the development of knowledge enhanced urban design models for better accessibility and user needs in transport for sustainable urban environment
    • ISHTAR (£750K EC FP5 funded 2005-2007) for the development of decision support system for evaluating the impact on human health and heritage building of transport noise and air pollution
