MSc Interactive Media and Games Technologies

New Entirely Work-based MSc Course in the Faculty of Computing

Who this course is for
This course is for specialists in industry, working in positions which do not allow them to be absent for long from work, who want the opportunity to reflect upon their professional practice, to broaden their perspectives upon their current practice and to engage with industrial practice which is considered core for senior managers and practitioners within the interactive media and games industries. It is for those who want to boost their career with a postgraduate degree they can obtain working on problems related to their work. The course will be delivered by Gamelab London which is an industry facing Applied Research Group within the Faculty of Computing; or at the place of work of the student if the nature of the work is appropriate and with the employer’s agreement. Consultants and appropriately self-employed candidate students may also apply. It is also suitable for those studying from overseas.

When to start and how long it will take
The course starts after the official enrolment with negotiations about the programme of study, which can be initiated at any time. The course duration is very flexible - from 1 to 6 years, with a typical duration of 2-3 years; thus, the programme of study can be scheduled at the most suitable speed depending on the availability of the student.

What the study programme includes
The programme of study will be entirely practice driven and work-based, customized to the individual needs of the student in their workplace. The student is expected to work closely within their sector of the industry in order to discover, formulate, study and address key issues through a number of approaches – feasibility studies, professional portfolios, user modelling, audience experience and prototypes and project plans.

Modules include:
  • Research and Development Skills. This will be based upon on-line delivery. The module deals with the methods for conducting theoretical and experimental research and advising on analysing and planning practical work in the professional field
  • Work-Based Learning and Professional Development This will be delivered as a combination of self-study, individual tutoring and team-based guidance. It will introduce the methods for Work Based Learning and will prepare the student for building their professional portfolio.
  • User Centred Design and Methodologies In this module the student will be asked to write a proposal for the development of a large-scale Interactive Media provision for a particular community. This is a module which is specific to the individual programme of studies of each student.
  • Advanced Technical Development
This module will provide the student with the opportunity to substantially develop their own technical Interactive Media, Games and Rich Internet Application development skills.
  • Professional Portfolio In this module the student will collect and record evidence about their professional practice and will reflect upon it.
  • Project Management Module. This can be entirely work-based, or accredited on the basis of an external professional certificate (e.g., PRINCE)
  • MSc Dissertation. This will allow the student to demonstrate the level of professionalism they achieved during the course of study.
How to schedule the study
The student must negotiate the specific programme of studies with the Course Organiser. The individual modules included may also involve negotiation with the Module Organiser for the corresponding module. The employers are directly involved most of the time since their support will be required both in the beginning of the course, when the programme of study is scheduled, as well as later on, while negotiating the content of each module.
