PGCE School Direct at London Met: Cardinal Pole
PGCE Schools Direct Lead School Training Partner
PGCE School Direct at London Met: Cardinal Pole, is a broad partnership of 30 schools, across London, working together to provide School Direct Teacher Training in Secondary, Primary and Early Years. This is part of the much larger family of nearly 100 School Direct at London Met schools. It represents a large body of schools who have joined together with London Metropolitan University to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.
Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University, and the school experience divided between two partner schools. A small number of primary schools have requested School Direct Salaried trainees; they will host the trainee for the majority of the course, and release them to the university, for tuition.
About the School
Cardinal Pole Catholic School is a friendly, high-achieving mixed comprehensive school, in a brand new building on Morning Lane, Hackney, right at the heart of the community we serve. It is recognised by Ofsted as a ‘good school with outstanding features’. They have a thriving sixth form, and their GCSE and A Level results are superb.
Cardinal Pole has, for many years, been committed to providing excellent Initial Teacher Education. They offer a thorough programme of professional studies led by a highly experienced teaching and learning team, including Rob Fonseca, who has been seconded part-time to London Metropolitan University to help build the School Direct alliance, and Adam Hall, who runs the in-house ITE programmes.
Cardinal Pole is excited to be working in collaboration with London Met, and with their partnership group of 30 schools across London, to develop a high quality, rigorous programme of Initial Teacher Education.
All of their trainees work with the support and guidance of a qualified and experienced mentor. Many Cardinal Pole teachers trained at the school; they have enjoyed a comprehensive NQT induction programme, enabling them to make a flying start to their careers.
The school also runs an extensive programme of in-service training for staff at all stages of their careers, including an in-house MA in Education Leadership, which 10 of their middle leaders are currently following. All staff join one of four working groups, undertaking action research projects leading to direct improvements in the quality of teaching and learning in the school.
