PGCE School Direct at London Met: Aylward Academy
PGCE Schools Direct Lead School Training Partner
School Direct at London Met: Aylward Academy is a broad partnership of 30 schools, across London, working together to provide School Direct Teacher Training in secondary, primary and early years. This is part of the much larger family of nearly 100 School Direct at London Met schools. It represents a large body of schools who have joined together with London Metropolitan University to build a cross-capital alliance, providing diverse contexts in which to train the new generation of London teachers.
Most of our trainees follow a programme modelled on the traditional PGCE, with time spent under tutor supervision at London Metropolitan University, and the school experience divided between two partner schools. A small number of primary schools have requested School Direct salaried trainees; they will host the trainee for the majority of the course, and release them to the university, for tuition.
About the School
Aylward Academy is a mixed state comprehensive, in Edmonton, north London for 11-19 year olds. The school aims for all their students to achieve in a learning environment where everyone works as part of a community, sharing mutual respect and feeling safe in a supportive atmosphere. The school is focused on being right at the heart of the community they serve. It is recognised by Ofsted as a 'good school' and they have recently refurbished with an exciting new build for their thriving sixth form as part of this. The school is part of the Academies Enterprise Trust which is an innovative, unique and exciting national chain of over 70 primary, secondary and special academies throughout England. Their overarching aim is to 'make our best better' because they believe that every child matters.
Aylward Academy has, for many years, been committed to providing excellent Initial Teacher Education. They offer a thorough programme of professional studies led by a highly experienced teaching and learning team, including Melanie Bignold, who has been seconded part-time to London Metropolitan University to help build the School Direct alliance. She also runs the in-house ITE programmes.
The school is excited to be working in collaboration with London Met, and with their partnership group of 30 schools across London, to develop a high quality, rigorous programme of Initial Teacher Education.
All of their trainees work with the support and guidance of a qualified and experienced mentor. Many Aylward Academy teachers trained at the academy; they have enjoyed a comprehensive NQT induction programme, enabling them to make a flying start to their careers with many holding middle leadership positions with the academy.
The school also runs an extensive programme of in-service training for staff at all stages of their careers.
