Storytelling

Studio philosophy

Delve into an imaginary world of your own making inspired by fables, myths, fairytales, and the storytelling of different cultures, both historical and contemporary, to create stories with print, knit, weave or mixed media.

Each new design gives us the opportunity to tell the world a story - perhaps about ourselves, another culture, or a fantasy of our imagination.

In this project you can be inspired by fables and myths, both urban and historic, as well as figures, buildings, or events that are legendary or personal, to interpret as contemporary design solutions. We will examine the storytelling of different cultures, both historical and contemporary, to provide the concept for project work.

You will begin by producing your own story book, collecting imagery, materials, drawn and photographic research, collaging and producing a narrative of colour, image and texture, and developed using print, knit, weave or mixed media.

During the project, both traditional and digital methods of design and production will be combined, using hand and software generated imagery.

You will develop your specialist area of textiles, and progress towards a level of professionalism to work independently within your discipline.

We will look at the idea of giving the design a narrative though ‘heritage’ products. These may have been given an added value through personalisation, upcycling, or an awareness and use of sustainable materials and issues.

During this Studio there will be the opportunity to take part in a Live Project, using your specialism to produce textiles for fashion, accessories or interiors.
