Studio 5: C.O.D.E

A matrix of thought and action. 

“CODE is a system of rules (a design process) to convert information into another form or representation.” 

This studio explores activist yet reflective modes of practice for fashion, textiles and jewellery with exciting and fast moving project based briefs. 

You will develop a personal thought and action matrix though which you can process, define and communicate your experiential understanding of the world; identifying your innovative and intellectual territory position within a broad creative landscape. 

The studio will teach skills that support key areas of design that include: making, information processing and transformative intervention in private and in public spaces. 

Investigating, questioning and documenting your creative process will be key to building your personal design vocabulary, not only to understand where you position yourselves as designers and interventionists, but also to identity new design spaces to occupy. The studio will encourage and expect self-expression, through which to bring clarity to your own understanding so that you can engage in creative dialogue with others. 

Rooted in the philosophy of C.O.D.E is the importance given to understanding material properties and how to work with them, so that you can explore how you might adapt and develop new ways of engaging with a spectrum of materials, with both traditional and new technologies. Think of yourselves as ‘change-makers’, developing design outcomes that range from the commercial to social activism, underpinned by a human-centred approach.
