Unit 1

Unit brief

ARU Architecture as City Platform

This year Florian Beigel and Philip Christou will be taking a new role in the School. They will not be leading a group of students in their diploma studies as Diploma Unit 1.

Students across the School of Architecture will be offered the opportunity to arrange through their tutors to come to ARU to discuss their design project in group or one to one sessions. These sessions will take place on Wednesday afternoons between 2 and 5pm with prior reservation by your tutor on a first-come first-served basis.

The intent of these sessions is to strengthen and support the direction of the unit/studio, and to help to develop the personal thoughts and potentials of individual students.

Florian Beigel and Philip Christou with ARU will also take part in design crits and special workshop events within the School, and will be arranging a program of public lectures and exhibitions with the help of student volunteers.

ARU's design as research agenda developed over many years in practice will form the basis of this discourse. Ultimately, ARU would like to be able to bring people into a position to develop a cultural dimension in their work, built on a continuity of architectural knowledge and an ability to make well-considered translations of architectural languages within contemporary contexts.
