Prebiotic synthesis in non-aqueous solvents: Could solvents like liquid ammonia (NH3) and formamide (HCO-NH2) support the formation of peptides and nucleic acids (or their equivalents).  He is also interested in 
An Expanded Genetic Information System (AEGIS): The synthesis of RNA analogues containing non-standard bases, and an examination of their chemical and catalytic behaviours.  
Dr Bhaven Patel's research is in the development of new methodologies in organic chemistry / Natural product synthesis
