The Ornamental/Sentimental Studio specialises in print, stitch and embellishment techniques for both fashion and interiors.
The London Embroidery Studio started the year, with the Live Project ‘Subvert’. Here, students examined the role of embroidery, a technique normally associated with luxury, attempting to reinterpret it for a contemporary market. Illustration (software and by hand) developed these outcomes both on garments and products.
This was followed by a competition for Bemz, who produce the fabrics for Ikea furniture. A CASS student reached the final three in the UK and went forward for the international 'best design' public vote. Working with both hand and digital print, designers demonstrated their outcomes on the Ikea furniture with CAD visualisations.
The Adidas sportswear project followed, asking students to look at new areas for the brand to explore- encouraging innovative design and material experimentation, leading to successful work placements within the design studio for some!
Second year students also produced designs for Parker Knoll furniture, with the opportunity to show in the London Design Festival and beyond.
Graduating designers show their Major Project collection, featuring the full range of concepts, techniques and material processes mastered over the year. Their designs for fashion, interior fabrics, products and wallpapers show exquisite sampling and realisation.
