Work Rest Play Studio
Studio led by Kaye Newman & Karl Harris
About the Studio Show
Work Rest and Play has looked at the challenges when designing for corporate work space. It has focused on both the needs of the individual and how a life balance needs to be achieved in our pressured society.
New and emergent technology has brought a new mobility and sense of autonomy to the daily pattern. Plus the economic climate has forced managers to rethink how they use space. There is no longer the luxury of having a owned space but in reality does the work force really need it, can you generate a valued sense of belonging when space is transient?
The studio worked with BNY Mellon, an American Asset bank and redesigned the 49th Floor of Canada Square, Canary Wharf. This premium open plan space offers awe inspiring views across North, South East and West of London.
The students researched flexible working practices and how the through a concierge system the sales team could preplan their working day and book spaces that were applicable to the function of the task.
Practice has become very dynamic, planning and organizing whilst walking and standing were as much of the daily routine as the understood report writing. Movement often brings its own sense of privacy and actually acts as a catalyst for new business as it allows for serendipitous meetings between individuals.
The environmental factors of open space have to adapt and respond to spontaneity. The space need to consider both the acoustics and the light intensity both can be intrusive or energizing.
The studio then took the business out of the office and each student has placed the workspace in other places that can be adapted into flexible working spaces, hotels, community spaces, restaurants and private members clubs. Many of these commercial/community spaces also need to rethink how they attract customers and improve occupancy and functionality. As they say ‘watch this space’, Work Rest And Play un-wrapped.
