About the show
The Soft Furnishings exhibition will feature work undertaken over the past year by students at beginner, intermediate and advanced levels, including our current prize winners. The range and quality of work speaks for itself; all of the work on display is fully professional in the quality of its design and making, and much of it very demanding in planning and technique.
Students from the Soft Furnishing courses are awarded prizes annually by The Worshipful Company of Upholders and Soft Furnishers (who awarded a bumper seven prizes in 2011) and many have gone on to work in the soft furnishing industry; either to start their own small businesses, join larger soft furnishing companies, or to work with event organisers, interior designers and textile designers. Past students have also gone on to secure teacher training qualifications to enable them to teach the subject are various levels.
Our courses aim to give a broad understanding of the subject and deliver an extensive range of skills and techniques during the year long courses. Both courses are workshop based and consist of practical demonstrations and exercises, with professional techniques and advice, followed by practical, full scale projects at the end of each course. Part 1 focuses on basic skills at beginners and intermediate levels, whilst Part 2 progresses to the more advanced techniques to enable participants to undertake soft furnishing projects at a level that could help them gain employment or set up their own business once further experience is gained.
