BA (Hons) Interior Design and Technology
The year began with the multi-disciplinary Aldgate Project, which was part of a deeper investigation into the east end of London, exploring ways that the community could identify itself and find more value within their neighbourhoods. The investigation produced opportunities for drawing the urban landscape and the multi-cultural vibrancy that exists here. Radan Cicen produced work which has been chosen for exhibition in the Hospital Club, Covent Garden this summer, where some of the best student artwork will be shown, a high accolade indeed.
Our students entered both the Royal Society of Arts and Design and Art Direction competitions and we have had nominations including ‘Best in Year’ in both and we are excitedly waiting to hear if our students have won prizes. The students looked at energy saving and sustainable ideas for the Workplace, and ‘Blue Sky’ Hotel suites. Congratulations to Hana Snablova, Anna Czarnowska, Justin Melican, Michael Cielwicz, Christina Ase and Kristine Mathisen.
Third year students are encouraged to develop their entrepreneurial skills and take on small projects independently. They developed two live briefs for a Bar in Shoreditch and a refurbishment of a YMCA centre and have grown in design confidence while advancing their own industry knowledge.
The course works with over fifty design practices in London, where the designers might mentor or deliver briefs for studio projects. Many of them are so pleased with the presented work that they offer internships. In particular, Banbury Walker Associates , Estee Lauder, BDG and Casa Forma are some of the companies who have offered great opportunities for our students this year.
The second year students have enjoyed an internship project proposing emergency hotel rooms for Gensler Architects and have developed ideas of ‘hidden space’, collaborating with two universities in South Korea which will be published in book form a little later this year.
This summer students are exhibiting at KPMG at Canary Wharf, Human Scale, Clerkenwell Design Week, Allen & Overy, the London Festival of Architecture, Design and Art Direction, Free Range and of course our own Summer Show.
We look forward to yet another busy year next year!
